If you’re gearing up for an annual spring cleaning session, we bet that the ‘ole oven is on your list. Cleaning your oven is one of those tasks that a lot of people dread doing, but there are ways to feel better about it! For example, getting the job done:

1. Without toxic chemicals.

2. Without scrubbing your arm out of its socket.

This is not a spring-cleaning myth! It can be done.

Here’s what you need:

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ½ cup liquid dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Large-bristled paintbrush

Here’s what you do:

1. Mix all of your ingredients into a bowl. Then, slowly add water, stirring until everything forms a thick paste.

2. Remove all the racks from your oven (those, you have to clean separately).

3. Using your paintbrush, spread the paste over the entire interior surface of the oven.

4. Close the oven door and let the paste sit overnight (at least 8-10 hours).

5. Wipe the paste away with a wet sponge. It’s helpful to keep a bowl or bucket of water handy so you can dip frequently – the key to removing the paste is lots of water. Tip: If you run into any tough spots, try using a scrub brush instead of a sponge. You’ll get more leverage that way.

6. Clean off your paintbrush and admire your sparkly-clean oven.

Easy to Hard: 3 Types of Home Energy Audits

by Don Roth

How is your home’s energy being used? Where is it going? If you’ve never conducted an energy audit, it might (literally) be going out of the window.

Conducting a home energy audit will help you pinpoint where your house is losing energy and what you can do about it. Some steps are easy as pie, but others may require a professional. So we’ve provided three levels of actions you can take for a more energy efficient (and more comfortable home). Let’s get started!

Easy: Get It Done in 5 Minutes, No Sweat

These three simple adjustments are a great start to changing your home energy use:

1. Audit Energy Bills. The first step to an energy audit is understanding your household’s energy consumption. Check out your energy bills and come up with “base” number for how much energy is typically consumed during a billing cycle.

2. Inspect Windows. Move from room to room, inspecting all of your windows. Look for condensation buildup on the windowpanes. Then, wet your hand under a sink and run your hand along the perimeter of every window. The moisture on your hand will help you detect drafts instantly. Jot down any windows with leaks so you can seal them later.

3. Inspect Doors. Check all exterior doors for air leaks the same way you inspected your windows. Inspect the door’s weather stripping for air leaks, too, recording anything you find.

Moderate: Some minor adjustments, but nothing crazy

Now that you know where your home’s energy is going, it’s time to fix it! If you’re unhappy with your energy bills and want to actively lower your household’s energy consumption, try these improvements:

1. Seal Air Leaks. Use a caulk gun to seal leaks around any windows that had air leaks. Repair or replace any weather stripping along any exterior doors that showed signs of leaks.

2. Inspect the Furnace. Replace your furnace filters every three months and schedule a routine checkup for your furnace at least once a year. If your furnace is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with a more energy efficient system.

3. Regulate Fridge and Freezer Temps. The recommended temperature is 37-40 degrees for the fresh food compartment and 5 degrees for the freezer section. Any higher than this, and your refrigerator is working too hard!

Hard: These Require Some Handy Skills or a Professional

These are jobs that should only be tackled if you’re comfortable handling all of the steps yourself. Before you start, read over the instructions carefully. If you need a hand, hire a professional to help you with these projects:

1. Inspect Air Ducts. Clean ductwork means better indoor air quality and up to a 40 percent increase in your HVAC system’s efficiency. Inspect your air ducts at least once a year on your own or hire a professional to examine (and possibly clean) your ducts.

2. Install a Programmable Thermostat. Not only does a programmable thermostat make your life easier, it can save your about $180 a year on energy costs. Tip: If one room is always colder than the rest of your home, you may need to balance your central heating system

3. Hire a Professional Auditor. If you’d like a more in-depth look at your energy consumption, consider hiring a professional auditor to conduct a more thorough assessment. The professional will usually use several tools, including infrared cameras, manometers, digital probe thermometers and moisture meters to gauge how air, heat and moisture are working in your home.

Which level is right for you?

2104 Real Estate Trends: Here's the Scoop

by Don Roth

The past few years in real estate have been unpredictable. Between high foreclosures one year to low inventory in some major markets the next, it’s hard to tell where the market is going to go.

This year, we've found a few constants that everyone can agree upon for 2014. A few might surprise you! If you’re looking to buy a second home or buy a first one without it turning into a bidding war, 2014 may be your year.

1. Dodd-Frank Lending Changes

If you’re looking to get a mortgage in 2014, watch out. The lending changes in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act took effect on January 10. As an effort to prevent future housing meltdowns, they have some tight requirements for borrowers seeking what are now called “qualified mortgages.” One of the biggest changes is that lenders will be taking a closer looking at living expenses as well as your debt-to-income ratio, to make sure a borrower can make payments.

2. Expect Turnarounds

When it puts together its Turnaround Towns Report, Realtor.com crunches a lot of numbers, including nationwide median list prices in a variety of cities as well as the number of days properties for sale stay on the market. Based on this data, they’re frequently seeing signs of strength in areas that were previously hit hard by foreclosures or very high inventory.

3. Home Affordability will Decline

Home affordability isn’t just an issue in major markets like New York City and San Francisco, which are seeing median sales prices in the mid-to-upper six figures. The National Association of Realtors’ Home Affordability Index, which compares home prices with income, found that home affordability dropped to a five-year low in 2013 as increases in home prices outpaced income growth.

4. Don’t Count on Finding a Foreclosure

Fewer homeowners are losing their homes as the economy improves — and as lending rules tighten — so there aren’t as many foreclosure deals and short sales to be found.

5. It May be a Good Time to Buy a Second Home

The real estate market, particularly in places like Florida and Nevada, is seeing more inventory, but listing prices are well below the national average. This is ideal if you’ve always dreamed of having a vacation home but worried about affordability.

In Fort Lauderdale, for instance, prices have gone up 29 percent in the last year, but still remain below the national median list price. This means demand continues to be high, but sellers have not yet taken advantage of the increase in demand. Miami, Phoenix and Las Vegas are also showing similar trends.

Shower Nirvana: 4 Upgrades That Make Bathing Better

by Don Roth

Think about this: Most of the days in your life will probably begin or end with a shower.

Your bathing routine can be the perfect start (or end) to your day, but a so-so shower setup can start you off on the wrong foot. So, if you’re not 100 percent stoked about your current situation, try one of these big-impact additions.

Since everyone’s shower budget is different, we collected ideas from a range of prices. Choose the upgrade that works best for you!

1. Eucalyptus Experience: $10

If you’re into woodsy scents and a natural atmosphere, eucalyptus is for you. Simply purchase a bundle of eucalyptus (available at most flower and natural grocery stores) and hang it in your shower where it won’t get wet. Humidity from the steamy water will cause the plant to release its essential oils, giving you a therapeutic experience with no extra effort.

2. Shower Caddy Upgrade: $50

If you’re living a caddy-less existence (or your current storage rack has a distinct “dorm room vibe”), an upgrade will make a big difference. I use the Zenith Kemp Caddy ($50) because it’s large enough for all of my stuff, and also has nice spots to hang several razors. Plus, I’ve had some bad tension rod experiences in the past, so this over-the-shower model is my jam.

But, if you love tension rods, we’ve heard good things about this slightly more expensive model by simplehuman.

3. Singing Showerhead: $150

Would you be happier if your showers came with musical accompaniment? Probably. To test the waters, bring a stereo or phone into the bathroom with you and pump some tunes (or news, podcasts, audio books, etc.) just to see how you like it.

If you dig the experience, you may want to invest in a Bluetooth showerhead (especially because the stereo/phone set-up will be difficult to hear). The Kohler Moxie Showerhead is one of the most popular options on the market, so that’s a good place to start looking. However, if you have a cutting-edge showerhead you don’t want to part with, consider a suction-cup stereo instead.

Tip: Whatever you choose, make sure you keep the volume control near the shower – it’s going to sound extremely loud once you shut the water off!

4. Toasty Bathroom Floors: $2,000 and Up

You may associate heated bathroom floors with luxury hotels and Mark Zuckerberg’s house, but they’re not actually that out of reach! If you have a healthy budget ($2,000- $15,000 depending on the system you install), radiant floor heating (RFH) can be yours, too.

So, if icy-cold tiles are consistently making your shower exits less enjoyable, radiant floor heating may be just the thing.

Tip: Like all remodeling projects, there are benefits and drawbacks to RFH. For more information, check out this article weighing pros and cons of heating your bathroom floor by Angie’s List.

Be Productive at Home: 7 Uses for Downtime

by Don Roth

You probably have more free time than you realize. It just comes in really small doses.

Yes, your day is filled with a hundred tasks – work, appointments, grocery shopping and (sometimes) the gym. The list goes on. But between all of that rigmarole there are actually bite-sized pieces of “downtime.”

Example: Those three extra minutes you wait by the front door while your kids are getting ready for school, which you spend playing Candy Crush.

You can make better use of these moments! Here are seven common “downtime” situations and a quick chore you can tackle when they occur.

1. Kitchen: Your Water is Taking Forever to Boil

You know that watching it won’t speed things up, but it’s tempting to stare at those tiny little bubbles anyway, tapping your foot and waiting for the boil party.

Try this instead: Check your dishwasher situation. If it’s clean, empty it out! If it’s dirty, do a quick lap around the house and fill it up.

2. Laundry Room: The Dryer Cycle Isn’t Quite Done

Everybody jumps the gun sometimes and heads to the laundry room expecting dry clothes but instead finds 2-5 minutes left on the timer. Don’t walk away!

Try this instead: Grab a damp cloth or sponge and clean the tops and sides of your washing machine. If you arrived really early, give your washer and dryer a full clean.

3. Bathroom: Your Bath is Filling Up

It’s tempting to just sit back and imagine the relaxing awesomeness that you’re about to enjoy, but it’s not very productive.

Try this instead: Do a lightning clean. Make sure there is ample toilet paper on the roll and refill the soap dispenser if it’s down to the dregs. Then empty the trash and remove any stray reading materials. By then, it’ll be bath time.

4. Entryway: Your Ride is Late Picking You Up

You’re dressed. Shoes and coat are on. You look fantastic. But your ride is nowhere in sight. Don’t get on Twitter!

Try this instead: Look around. See a bunch of shoes or other entryway-related clutter? Snatch it up and put it where it belongs.

5. Bedroom: You Woke Up 5 Minutes Early

This one is not easy. It’s tempting to wake up, see the time, realize you can go back to sleep for a few minutes, and do exactly that. Resist the urge.

Try this instead: Snatch up any dirty clothes lying on the floor (or stuffed into the closet) and throw them into the hamper.

6. Living Room: The TV Show Went to Commercial

Orange is the New Black may be commercial free, but ads do still happen occasionally. And guess what? You don’t need to learn more about the benefits of owning a Snuggie.

Try this instead: Grab any stray cups or dishes and take them to the dishwasher. If you have extra time, wash a few of them in the sink.

7. Dining Room: The Food Isn’t Ready Yet

In this situation, you’re doing yourself a favor by staying busy – nothing is more frustrating than sitting in your chair, smelling a dinner that you can’t eat yet.

Try this instead: Audit your cutting boards and make sure they’re still safe! Cutting boards can harbor harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. Coli, so take five minutes and give them a closer look.

7 Ways to Make Your Entryway More Inviting

by Don Roth

Never underestimate the importance of first impressions. Your entryway is the first thing a guest sees when they step into your home, so it should shout “Welcome!” Think of your entryway or foyer as the space that sets the tone for the rest of your home.

But what if your entryway isn’t up to snuff? Instead of welcoming your guests, it may be sending off a completely different vibe. Change that!

Add some charm to this space with a few simple adjustments.

1. Clear Away Clutter

If your entryway is tight and full of clutter, it can feel overwhelming. Keep this area feeling spacious and clean by eliminating clutter and properly storing coats and shoes by your front door or in a closet. This is especially important if you don’t have a mudroom.

2. Switch to Light Curtains

If you have windows in your foyer, fit them with lighter-fabric curtains that will let in some natural sunlight. If natural lighting isn’t possible, consider adding wall lighting for a warm, soft glow. Tip: Overhead lighting can feel harsh, so avoid it unless the lighting fixture has a decorative touch such as pendant lighting or chandeliers.

3. Add Mirrors

Hanging a large mirror on the wall or above a piece of furniture is an easy way to make small entryways feel larger than they actually are. This will also make the space brighter, because mirrors will reflect light and help it bounce from wall to wall.

4. Display Treasured Items in a Tablescape

A tablescape is a tabletop display of your most cherished items arranged in an organized fashion. To make your own, push a small chest or table against the wall. Then, decorate the top of the table! The items you choose should be an extension of your personality and past experiences. Design Tip: A tablescape looks best if the accessories are different heights and shapes. We also recommend you follow the 60-30-10 rule for a color palette.

5. Infuse Inviting Aromas

There’s a reason why realtors always want the home they’re selling to smell like fresh-baked cookies! Baking scents such as vanilla and cinnamon are inviting and comforting, so they’ll make your guests feel at home. Consider keeping candles, air fresheners or reed diffusers near your entryway.

6. Bring the Outdoors In

If your front door opens directly into a living room or kitchen, large floor plants can help create the illusion of an entryway. Their presence wiill help define the space between the front door and the rest of the living area. Tip: If you have a small foyer, add small potted plants or succulents on a table or shelf.

7. Don’t Forget the Floors

If you have hardwood or tile flooring in your entryway, add some texture by laying down a floor runner or rug. This can completely transform the vibe your entryway gives off to your guests. Tip: Oriental or patterned rugs are a great choice because they tend to hide dirt and wear well.

Lowering the temperature of your thermostat can do more than reduce your energy bill (although we think that benefit is so awesome that it still made the list). Dropping temps just two to five degrees can also help you lose weight and provide a better night’s sleep.

If you’re not ready take the temperature plunge 24/7, consider only dropping household temps at night or while you’re at work. Tests show that lowering your home’s temperature for at least four hours a day will make a difference.

Here are five ways that lowering your thermostat can improve your life:

Below 75 Degrees: Prolong the Life of Plants

Give houseplants a longer lease on life by dropping below 75 degrees. We’ll spare you the science as to why this works, but basically, plants need less water when they’re cool. This is especially handy if you’re heading out of town. The chances of coming home to lifeless leaves will be much less likely (unless you have tropical plants)!

Below 70 Degrees: Lose Weight (Without Hitting the Gym)

Move over “diet and exercise,” there’s a new weight loss secret in town! To shed a few pounds, drop your thermostat below 70 degrees. You don’t want the room to be so cold that you’re shivering and uncomfortable, but cool enough so that a light sweater feels perfect.

Here’s how it works: When the temperature drops, your energy expenditure increases, so you burn more calories (roughly 100 more a day). Over a period of several weeks, that increased energy can translate into an extra 3,500 calories burned, which means one lost pound.

Below 65 Degrees: Extend the Life of Your Fridge

Your refrigerator and freezer work really hard to keep your food safe and fresh, so cut them some slack. When your home is cooler, these large appliances don’t have to work as hard to keep your food cool. This can translate into fewer maintenance problems and a longer appliance lifespan.

The lower your thermostat, the easier things are for your fridge and freezer, so try dropping the temps dramatically for a few days if you’re heading out of town. Just don’t go below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, or you’ll be battling frozen pipes!

Below 65 Degrees: Get a Better Night’s Sleep

If you want a better night’s sleep, lower your home’s temperature by about five degrees. This works because when you go to sleep, your “set point” – the temperature your brain needs to reach before going to sleep – is lowered. If your room is too hot, you’ll have a harder time reaching this point and falling asleep.

One Degree at a Time: Save Cash on Energy Bills

If the ‘ole energy bill is sucking up more cash then you’d like, look to your thermostat! Each one-degree drop can reduce your energy bill by 1-3 percent. Tip: To save even more money, drop your thermostat by five to ten degrees while you sleep. Not only will you get a better night’s sleep, you’ll lower your energy bill by 10-15 percent!

Space Heaters: Stay Cozy, Stay Safe

by Don Roth

A winterized house and a heavy blanket will keep you comfortable during a chilly night, but nothing delivers that toasty, warm-to-the-bone feeling quite like a space heater (except maybe a roaring fireplace). If you’re going to break out a space heater or two this season, take a minute to brush up on these dos and don’ts. That way, your cozy rooms won’t be harboring a fire hazard.

In the market for a new space heater? We like the Presto Heat Dish because it has multiple settings and super-focused direction. In fact, it’s warming our office right now! If you want something a little bigger, try this Oscillating Ceramic Heater from Lasko.

The Dos and Don’ts of Space Heaters:

Do. Check the safety features on your heater. You want one that has been certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, so check the box (or heater itself) for a UL, ETL or CSA certification symbol. On ours, the symbol is on the bottom.

Don’t. Rely on space heaters for your entire house. This wastes energy and won’t be very effective. Instead, only use a space heater when you’re in the room you’re trying to heat, and close any doors to maximize efficiency.

Do. Choose a model with temperature controls. Multiple settings increase comfort, decrease energy usage and prevent overheating.

Don’t. Use a kerosene or propane space heater indoors! These types of heaters emit carbon monoxide, which is extremely toxic to humans and animals. To be safe, only run these heaters outdoors, where there is plenty of ventilation.

Do. Place your space heater on a nonflammable surface (like tile) and keep it at least three feet away from bedding, curtains, furniture and feet.

Don’t. Leave your space heater on while you sleep or when you leave the house. If you’ve been using your heater to warm your bedroom at night, this is the perfect time to invest in a thicker comforter!

Do. Plug your space heater directly into an outlet. Using an extension cord or multi-plug power strip creates a fire hazard, and should be avoided.

Don’t. Run your space heater in the garage if you have chemicals or highly flammable items (like gasoline or paint thinner) stored in that area.

Safely Thaw a Frozen Pipe

by Don Roth

Why Do This?

Even if you’ve taken precautions to prevent frozen pipes, it can still happen during single-digit nights. Frozen pipes can lead to expensive water damage, so you want to thaw them as soon as possible. However, hiring a plumber to do this for you can cost $200 or more, so you can save a lot of money by getting it done yourself!

Time: 60 minutes

What You'll Need:

  • hairdryer
  • patience

How To:

Safety Note: NEVER use an open flame to thaw your pipe! This will permanently damage the pipe and may even start a fire. It’s also best to avoid “thawing machines,” which are expensive and can be dangerous when they’re not operated by a professional.

  1. Check the weather forecast. If your pipe froze because of a freak cold snap, but the weather has warmed up since then, the pipe may thaw on its own. If the foreseeable forecast is frosty, you’ll probably need to take action.
  2. Locate the main shut-off valve. Before you begin, locate your main shut-off valve to make sure you know how to turn off your water. Once your pipe thaws, leaks are common. So, it’s important to be ready!
  3. Turn your hot and cold faucet handles. Check to see if water will come out of your cold water faucet handle, and then do the same for your hot water. If your cold water pipe has frozen, but water is still flowing from your hot water pipe, you’re in luck! Turn on your hot water and let it run for 10-20 minutes. The heat will usually transfer to the frozen pipe and fix the problem.
  4. Grab a hairdryer. If that doesn’t work (or your hot water pipe is frozen, too), it’s time to break out the hairdryer. If you can see the frozen area, great. Set your hairdryer to high heat and blast away (holding the dryer a few inches from the pipe) until your water returns. If you can’t see the freeze because the pipe goes into a wall, just aim your hairdryer as close to the problem as possible. Pipes conduct heat extremely well, so even if the freeze is behind a wall, you can usually thaw it out. Just note that this can take 30-45 minutes (sometimes more) to work.
  5. Call a professional (optional). If you continue to have trouble, your best bet is to call a professional plumber. If you ask nicely, most of them are willing to talk you through other solutions at no charge.

The Situation: “My wife and I were painting rooms," explains Morris, a public relations manager. "At one point, she went downstairs for something and came back to find that our two-year-old had used the paint roller as a push toy throughout the hardwood floors upstairs. There was light blue paint all over the floor in each room.”

What Went (Really) Wrong: “We tried to remove the paint. I went to Home Depot to get a floor sander, polyurethane finish, etc. Five minutes into sanding, there was wood dust everywhere. The sanding was uneven and a total mess. We ended up going to Sears and arranged to have wall-to-wall carpeting installed. The whole thing cost us $6,000!”

What the Expert Says: “When you’re painting walls, especially with children in the home, you should always be using a low VOC water-based paint on the walls,” says Amy Matthews, a home improvement expert. “When wet, it can be removed from most surfaces with soap and water. Always take the time finding a pro to solve home improvement issues for the right price at the right time. There is no crime in having a patch of temporarily damaged wood floor!”

2. The Bathroom Debacle

The Homeowner: Kathi Rollberg Boldt, Ashland, Massachusetts

The Situation: "We decided to renovate our bathroom while we were also doing the kitchen because there was a sale on bath countertops. If you ordered them with the kitchen, you saved a bit," says Boldt, a middle school math teacher and married mother of three.

What Went Wrong: "We had to buy a different sink because the countertop wouldn’t fit the dimensions of our bathroom,” she explains. “After demolishing the wall tile, we found water damage on the walls. When all was said and done, the job that was going to just cost us for the tiles, countertop and cabinet ended up being about $3,000!”

What the Expert Says: Beware of what seems to be a “good deal,” but leads you to expand the size of your project, suggests Matthews. “If you don’t assess the reality of the cost, physical commitment and tools needed for the job, you will always end up biting off more than you can chew,” she says.

3. A Mudslide in My Backyard

The Homeowner: Kyle James, Redding, California

The Situation: “I fancy myself a pretty handy guy,” says James, the founder of Rather-Be-Shopping.com and a married father of three. “So last year, after we had our pool professionally installed, I took on the task of doing some erosion control on a fairly large slope created by the pool installation. I did some research, installed jute netting to hold the soil and seeded the hill with seasonal rye grass.”

What Went Wrong: ”One afternoon, I went outside and turned on the sprinkler on the hill to water the seed. We left for a family get-together and returned only to discover that I hadn’t turned the water off. The hill got completely saturated, and the sprinkler created a mudslide. After a phone call and a $2,500 bill, I learned to leave some D.I.Y. projects to the pros.”

What the Expert Says: "Kyle’s only mistake was not turning off the water! When doing your own projects, you have to be very mindful. Attention to detail can make the difference between a successful project and a debacle.”

4. How Not to Fix a Leaky Toilet

The Homeowner: Marci Echeverria, West Orange, New Jersey

The Situation: One afternoon, I heard the toilet running. I tried playing with the handle, which didn’t help at all. My husband Tony came home and he went upstairs to fix it. Neither one of us had any experience in this area. Still, Tony found some online videos explaining how and began to work on it. He came downstairs and declared that the toilet was fixed.”

What Went Wrong: ”Two days later, I saw drops of water on the floor of the second-floor hallway,” says Echeverria. "The next day, there were more drops on the floor. Then, I saw water dripping down from a huge wet spot. I called the plumber right away. Total cost: $300–$400, including paying the plumber to fix the toilet and a contractor to patch the ceiling. For every other repair since, we’ve gone straight to the pros!”

What the Expert Says: “Water damage can be one of the most costly (and inconvenient) repairs in a home," Matthews says. "And, though a running toilet can be an easy fix, ask yourself if the risk is worth the reward when a professional can often leave you dollars ahead in the long run.”
